About us
Yakushima Diving Life is located in Shitogo in the northern part of Yakushima and specializes almost exclusively in fun diving. We have a small number of guests, up to 4 (groups and diving shops are limited to 8), and you can dive at your own pace and relax in the waters of Yakushima on our own boat! Many original points only available at our store!
All dives are conducted with the boat securely by anchoring. We take our time in shallow water and try to introduce the ecological behavior of the creatures that are typical of Yakushima.
Our guide, Itaru, is passionate about diving and exploring the sea of Yakushima. He has dived in the oceans of the world and all over Japan, so he will be able to tell you more about the charm of the sea of Yakushima.

Kingdom of Fishes
Azahata(Tomato grouper) lives at a famous point in the sea of Yakushima. The red azahata against the blue sea is impressive and photogenic. It is a very small point, but an entire ecosystem has been created in a small space, and this spot is like a microcosm independent of the rest of the sea. A unique world has been created with the azahata as the keystone species. Although it is a small space, there are an extremely large number of creatures that can be seen, at 4.50, making it a hotspot of biodiversity.

Our Oceans
Yakushima Island is one of the most famous breeding grounds for the Cuttlefish(kobushime), and during the peak of the breeding season around May (April-June), as many as 20-30 Cuttlefish gather to lay eggs, courtship, and fight.
Yakushima Diving Life has a high encounter rate due to years of meticulous research. Yakushima’s cuttlefish will appear in the Netflix documentary program “Our Oceans” (2024)! It was completed after two years of research on the cuttlefish.

Coral spawning
Until around 1980, Yakushima was an island rich in seaweed(Sargassum ). Time has passed, the sea has changed, and it is now a subtropical sea completely rich in corals. In recent years, southern species have been increasing at an alarming rate.
Yakushima Diving Life conducts dives from the end of May to the end of September to observe coral spawning for several days each month, depending on the water temperature and sea conditions.
Let’s observe the corals of Yakushima from various angles together!
Tide pool
Yakushima’s tide pools are superb playgrounds! The tide pools are the small amount of ocean left after the tide has receded. Many creatures live in tide pools as small as a tatami mat. Among them, the Barred-chin blenny, popular among divers, is one of the easiest to photograph in Japan!
