屋久島という大自然の中で暮らすことはなんて贅沢なことでしょうか。
海も山も川もすぐ側にあって、生命の素晴らしさやありがたさを感じる日々です。
しかしそんな屋久島の自然も人間活動の影響を強く受けています。
海岸には処理し切れないほどの不燃性のゴミが打ち上がり、
海上を漂うプラスチックや漁具を見かけない日はありません。
海底に沈んだそれらのゴミは、サンゴや海洋生物を死に追いやっています。
地球温暖化は猛烈に進み、海中の変化の早さには戸惑うばかりです。
屋久島は日本一のアカウミガメの産卵地で知られていますが
その砂浜の半分は、防潮堤で遮られていて上手く産卵ができません。
その他にも海洋酸性化や海洋汚染、漁業資源の枯渇など
海だけを見ても問題は山積みです。
わたしたちに出来ることはなんだろうか？
当店で行えることはそう多くありませんが、豊かな海を願って
日々の生活から着実に変えていきます。

Living in Yakushima's great nature is a luxury, with the ocean, mountains, 
and rivers all nearby. Every day, I feel grateful for life. However, human activities 
are affecting this environment. Garbage that can't be fully processed 
washes up on the beaches, and plastic and fishing debris drift in the sea daily.
This pollution harms marine life and coral. Global warming is accelerating,
 and ocean changes are rapid. Yakushima, known for being the best loggerhead
 turtle spawning ground in Japan, has its beaches blocked by seawalls, 
affecting turtle nesting. Issues like ocean acidification, marine pollution,
 and depleted fish stocks are mounting. While we can't do much at our store, 
we aim to make small changes in our daily lives for a healthier ocean. We hope you'll join us.
